Birthday Love

Today I turned another year older. It was one of the better birthdays in recent memory. As each year passes, I find myself loving birthdays for a very different reason. Here are a few things that made my day awesome.

Birthday cards from both of my grandmas. Both had notes about praying for me and taking time for myself. Such cool messages to hear from the women I love so much.

Got to play in a volleyball tournament all day Saturday with some awesome ladies. One of them is the sweetest girl in the world. She texted my husband earlier in the week to find out my favorite type of cake and spent Friday night baking it just for me!

Angelfood cake and strawberry frosting. My absolute fav.

She brought it to the tournament and the team dug into the cake. Love that she spent her Friday night googling “how to bake an angel-food cake” and almost burning her house down just to surprise me. They don’t make them much more genuine than this girl and I love it.

Spent today with a cup of coffee, and this lovely gift from the hubster.

The Nook color from Barnes & Noble! We had gone to look at them earlier in the week but I wasn’t sure he would go for it since he was thinkin’ an iPad might be a nice addition. I already started Water for Elephants and am pumped to use this bad boy on the bus each morning! Kim; are you ready for a nook sharing buddy? I’m all over it!

Mr Housewife didn’t stop there. Today we spent a few hours going through some of the amazing new homes on the “Parade of Homes” tour.

Got a few ideas for the laundry room that we can possibly tackle this summer. Looking at houses isn’t his favorite thing to do, but it’s definitley mine. He sacrificed his afternoon of golf viewing to check the houses out, and even got excited about a few projects we might tackle. Love.

But the best part? He spent the evening making me one of my favorite things.

My man can make a mean french toast. That’s how we roll on Sunday nights. HEAVEN.

Love love love this birthday.

So what if….

Here’s hoping that since this is my blog, were living in a judgement free zone here. Hoping to give everyone a little dose of reality, and a peak into this chick’s life.

So what if……..
– Dinner tasted so bad last night that we tossed it in the garbage and had cereal and corn for dinner. As in, chicken not properly thawed, then not cooked long enough. Still clucking on the plate. Holy nasty. If my husband shows up dead of salmonella poisoning, it wasn’t on purpose.
– I’ve been driving around town since January with this taking up my entire back seat:

That’s a Christmas tree folks. I got it for 75% off after the holidays and haven’t had the motivation to move it downstairs. Classy.
– These have taken over our pantry:

Yes, it’s almost 20 boxes. Again; judgement free zone here.

Just livin the dream here folks, livin the dream.

I am the world’s most annoying person when it comes to managing my time. Weeknight’s are the worst based on my often crazy work schedule. We have pretty set lines of responsibility in our household. I do most of the cooking and the dude in my life does most of the cleaning. Typically it’s a fab arrangement that I’m completely ok with. However,  tonight was a big aha moment in our household. We realized weeknights are TOUGH to squeeze everything in!

Our normal weekly routine goes something like this.

  • 6-6:30pm: I leave work
  • 6:30-7pm: I finally make it home and start on dinner
  • 7-8ish: work on dinner, catch up with Mr. Housewife, and eat together.
  • After 8: catch up on TV, work emails, etc. Maybe squeeze a work-out in.

Then there’s nights like tonight. I roll in around 7 and finally start dinner. I scrape through our pantry and wonder if I can make a meal out of pancake mix, fruit snacks, and captain crunch. Finally realize I have enough for a normal meal and start working on dinner at 8pm. We FINALLY wrap up dinner around 9 and I’m spent. No running. No chatting. Just stressed out night on top of a stressed out work-day. Not getting a work-out in makes me feel like crap, then I grab fast-food which is even crappier, and then you’ve got a pretty crap-tastic little housewife. Not good.

The hubster and I have decided that since it’s Lent and all, we may as well use this as our excuse to try and change some of our behavior.

His goal? He’s going to be in charge of dinner once a week. Some of you may laugh and say that’s ridiculous, but for us? It’s a change of routine that will really help me out. That night I can leave 30 minutes later if I need to, or maybe run a quick errand on the way home. We’re also going to try and plan out some meals before grocery shopping so that we avoid the captain crunch, fruit snack, pancake mix scenario I mentioned above. This is also a pretty big ask for someone who would eat out everyday if he could. This will be a BIG help if it happens.

Mine? I am going to TRY and become a morning worker-outer. My goal is twice during the work-week. Even if I just did Tuesdays & Thursdays it would make a huge difference! Weekends I almost always squeeze a run in so I’m not worried about that. Right now I’m waking up around 6:45 every morning. Even if I got up at 6am I’d be able to fit in a pretty decent run those days. Plus maybe I’d actually be a little more relaxed in the morning; not running around like a disaster.

I have to say, Kelly was a big inspiration in this one! She goes to the gym most mornings and I would LOVE to have that out of the way. Then my evenings can be spent where they matter most; with the fam. (Sorry Kelly; I’m completely owning up to the blog-stalking that must’ve had to happen in order for me to know all this about you. Deal with it 🙂

Anyone else have any other tips? Help my sanity and feel free to share!

I love my friends. They’re all fun, they’re all crazy, and they  love nothing more than an excuse to get together for dinner or a night out. We cane up with a doozie of an idea recently and I thought I’d share; just in case any of you are looking for a fun girl’s night idea!

Starting in a week or so, my life will be college basketball.

The March Madness NCAA tourney is starting up, and I can kiss my tv goodbye. My husband’s obsessed, and all tvs will be on ESPN until the madness is over. I’ll watch a game or two, but I’m not going to be all turbo about it.

Sure I could spend hours on my bracket, looking up each team. Racking my brain trying to pick a few upsets here and there. Or…….I could change if up a bit for the ladies.

Could you care less about the games? Want an excuse to get the girls together? No basketball knowledge whatsoever is required for this game; actually the less you know, the more fun you’ll have! I introduce you to “Chicks Picks: a March Madness Girls Night”. Here are the details.

1. Invite all your friends over (or grab a few tables at a sports bar). Before they come over, have them set up accounts at cbssports.com. This website will do all the work for you, and will be way easier to manage.

2. Each girl draws a “topic” out of a hat. She must pick her entire bracket using that as a guideline. An example will help explain this part.

Example: I draw “mascots”. I must choose all winners based on who I think has a better mascot. My entire bracket will be filled out that way.

Let’s say Game 1 is University of North Carolina vs. the University of Minnesota.

They’re the tarheels, but apparantley their mascot is a ram. Let’s be honest. That ram would crush a gopher. You’ve already made your first decision. You choose UNC as the winner. Continue to choose your entire bracket, each game that way. Look things up as you need to!

Other topic ideas include:

Hottness of Head Coach

Texas Tech coach Pat Knight. Smokin. (He's since been fired, but who cares!)

Cuteness of Cheerleader uniforms

A UCLA uniform example. ADORABLE.

Scariest Fans

The Duke "Cameron Crazies"

Remember, we don’t care about what seed they are, who has a tougher conference, or who has the deepest bench. We just care about getting everyone together!

3. As the tournament progresses, you will receive points for how many winners you chose correctly. (IE; if UNC actually beats Minnesota in the above example, you’d get points). Remember, if you have everyone fill out their bracket on the website above, it will do everything for you!

4. Decide on a prize. My friends and I are each chipping in $10 to the pot. The winner gets a VISA Gift Card that they can spend however they want! We talked about having a spa gift certificate but realized that straight-up cash would be better. Do whatever you want!

Now instead of being bored out of your mind the next few weeks, you’ll find yourself cheering on those mascots! Or paying attention to the halftime shows a little more. WAY more fun than analyzing all the bball stats.

The brackets are announced Sunday, and games start on 3/15 (Tuesday). It’s not too late to get the girls together!

A few weeks ago I cleaned out our ridiculous junk drawer. In doing that, I also found an exciting little treasure. A sim card from one of our old cameras. I should say first off that I’ve had some real bad luck with cameras.

I’ve lost at least 2 point and shoots since college, and also had my computer die in Africa with ALL my photos saved on it. That being said, I had assumed there was no digital copy of the photos from our honeymoon. Imagine my surprise when I saw that this sim card was FULL of our honeymoon pics! Mind you this was almost three years ago, but still….what a great find.

This made my day to look through all these. Enjoy!

There are many more from my mom and dad’s nice camera. Now I just need to find those!

I’m working on another post with all the sweet things we did while we were there. Happy Saturday!

Has anyone stopped into an Ultimate Electronics lately?

They’ve gone belly-up, and are liquidating all their inventory. Since my husband is OBSESSED with gadgets, we swung in last weekend.

Smart move Mr. & Mrs. Housewife. We loaded up on some good deals; they almost PAID US to take it. Everything was almost 75% off at our store so it was a no-brainer.

We picked up this purple camera bag.

An extra battery for the DSLR camera:

and also picked an extra charger for our iPhones and some random cables for the TV. If you’re in the market for a new TV or any other gadgets, you’ve gotta get to one of the stores. They also had tons of cameras (digital/video/etc.) for heavily discounted prices. One note: obviously review everything before purchasing. It was kind of a train-wreck into the store and they were selling EVERYTHING. Down to the floor models and even the fixtures. If it’s open or a floor model just look her over a bit before stuffing it into your bag.

Even if you just need some random things like extra chargers or batteries, might as well swing in. I can almost guarantee you’ll find something worth the trip.

Happy shopping!

The mud-room lockers are finished. FINALLY! They’ve been sitting in our mud-room in various states of completion for the last month.

I got the plans for these bad-boys from Ana White’s awesome site: Knock Off Wood. Visit that site and I guarantee you’ll think of 7,000 woodworking projects you want to tackle. Great instructions and amazing projects.

It took one weekend to put everything together.

We decided from the beginning that we wanted to stain this piece rather than paint it. Because of that, we went with a high-quality wood and choose oak. I have to say, that did make the assembly a bit harder than I’d anticipated. Oak is MUCH harder than pine, and hand-pounding all the nails was pretty exhausting. Note to self: a nail gun may be a wise investment down the road!

The drawer is one of my favorite pieces. It holds SO much! The top part sits right on top of the base, and it’s incredibly sturdy based on the tough wood we used.

They sat this way for  a few weeks. I finally got around to the finishing pieces, which took just as long as the assembly!

Today I finally got them all wrapped up. Here they are!

Ooooo…………….Aaaahhhhh 🙂 Good stuff right?

Thankfully the builder had left us some stain from all our trim and woodwork in the house. It matches everything perfectly and I LOVE the storage. Because I’m lazy, I didn’t stain the inside of the drawer. I’m going to toss random crap in there all the time and I could care less about what it looks like!

I grabbed four hooks from Lowe’s and a drawer pull for the base. All of them are in oil-rubbed bronze to match the rest of the house.

Up top I stuck two yellow striped baskets.

These have been perfect for hats and gloves this winter. I also love that I had these already, so the cost was zilch/nada/nuthin. FREE.

I’m so happy with them! I have about 3 more feet to the side of the lockers. I’m thinking of making one more base unit for underneath the mirror just because the storage is so fab. I could always add a top hutch down the road if I get crazy.
