DIY Mud-room Lockers: Finished!

The mud-room lockers are finished. FINALLY! They’ve been sitting in our mud-room in various states of completion for the last month.

I got the plans for these bad-boys from Ana White’s awesome site: Knock Off Wood. Visit that site and I guarantee you’ll think of 7,000 woodworking projects you want to tackle. Great instructions and amazing projects.

It took one weekend to put everything together.

We decided from the beginning that we wanted to stain this piece rather than paint it. Because of that, we went with a high-quality wood and choose oak. I have to say, that did make the assembly a bit harder than I’d anticipated. Oak is MUCH harder than pine, and hand-pounding all the nails was pretty exhausting. Note to self: a nail gun may be a wise investment down the road!

The drawer is one of my favorite pieces. It holds SO much! The top part sits right on top of the base, and it’s incredibly sturdy based on the tough wood we used.

They sat this way for  a few weeks. I finally got around to the finishing pieces, which took just as long as the assembly!

Today I finally got them all wrapped up. Here they are!

Ooooo…………….Aaaahhhhh ūüôā Good stuff right?

Thankfully the builder had left us some stain from all our trim and woodwork in the house. It matches everything perfectly and I LOVE the storage. Because I’m lazy, I didn’t stain the inside of the drawer. I’m going to toss random crap in there all the time and I could care less about what it looks like!

I grabbed four hooks from Lowe’s and a drawer pull for the base. All of them are in oil-rubbed bronze to match the rest of the house.

Up top I stuck two yellow striped baskets.

These have been perfect for hats and gloves this winter. I also love that I had these already, so the cost was zilch/nada/nuthin. FREE.

I’m so happy with them! I have about 3 more feet to the side of the lockers. I’m thinking of making one more base unit for underneath the mirror just because the storage is so fab. I could always add a top hutch down the road if I get crazy.

Guest Room Update

Last week I finally got around to making a few small updates to one of the guest rooms. I had an idea of what I’d wanted for awhile, but I never got around to getting it done. The walls are a great yellow, and for the last year a white/yellow Crate & Barrel quilt had been covering the bed.

It was fine, but the quilt wasn’t doing it for me. The big squares were a little too modern, and I’m more traditional than I originally thought!

It all started with Home Goods. That store is gone be the death of me. I found a great quilt that had all the colors I was looking for. Some soft touches of yellow, but also some green and white.

I love the pattern. It also ties in great with the yellow but is much softer than the last quilt she was rockin. There’s a little paisley/floral thing happening that makes my heart swoon. For $30? Perfect.

Then I remembered these frames my momma had given me awhile ago. She had them for years but never found the perfect spot for them. They work perfectly here over the bed.

The guest room is used by family all the time, so I know they’ll like these additions. Plus I can finally look like we have loved ones; considering we’ve lived here a year and these are the first photos I’ve hung on the wall! What can I say; I was a bit hammer-shy for some reason.

Finally, I have this great metal mirror on the other wall.

I think it’s my favorite piece in the room. It’s got great white chippy paint all over it, and it’s huge so it makes a big enough statement on the wall alone.

Here she is; much cozier now!

The only thing left are some sort of window treatments for the big window (behind me in the photo above). I’ll keep my eye out for those but otherwise it’s MUCH cozier. Amazing what a few small accessories and a new blanket can do for a girl!

DIY Valentine’s Day Wreath

I love decorating for the holidays. That being said, I struggled with valentine’s day. I don’t have any red in my home, and all the decor seems to be covered in glitter. It’s also tough because I leave my “winter” stuff up for awhile. On a recent trip to JoAnn Fabrics, I was inspired by some of their valentine’s wreaths.

Regularly priced at $39.99, I couldn’t possibly understand spending that much. Even at the 30% off that day; $27.99 was too much for me to pay. I figured I could probably DIY something just as cute, for not even 1/2 as much!

I made my way through the store, and picked up a few different supplies. After snagging a plain, grapevine wreath I had to start “flaring” it up a bit.

This berry garland was on MEGA clearance from Xmas.

It was 90% off, so each package was only 69 cents!!! I loaded up on those and headed over to find some more filler. I found some greenery also on clearance and snagged a few stems.

I wanted to find something that would “valentine” it up a bit, and found these little fellas.

These were perfect because they could easily be poked into the wreath. I also liked that there were 3 hearts on each “stem”, so it packed a bit punch!

I also grabbed a small wooden “love” sign, figuring I’d jazz it up along the way somehow.

Once I got home, I laid all the valentine’s nonsense out on the table. The garland was first and was also the easiest. Because it’s just a long strand, I just looped it around the grape-vine wreath. (Sorry, no action shots of this one). Then I just stuck my little valentine’s pieces randomly in the wreath. Last step was securing the pieces with some floral wire and we;re all finished up!

Now she’s out on the front door; we’re ready for Valentine’s Day!

How did my costs shake out?

  • Grapevine Wreath = $3.99
  • Heart Picks: 2 @ 1.79 each = $3.58
  • Red Berry Garland: 3 @ .69 each = $2.07
  • Green Filler: 5 @ .97 = $4.85
  • Wooden “Love” = $1.99

TOTAL (adding in 20% off coupon) = $13.18.

Over 50% less than the Sale price at JoAnn’s. SUCCESS!

I love it! I think I’ll call it a day. 1 Valentine’s decoration is about all I can handle!

Paint Party

Since moving into our home a year ago, we’ve updated quite a bit with the rooms. Room Remix is having a great party where everyone lists out their paint projects and I thought now would be a great time to list all our home colors in one place!

Here you go readers. Small little house tour with some paint details. Enjoy!

The office on the main floor is a great red color. I have to admit that I was really nervous about a red but it looks great! The color is Hirschfield’s “Lover’s Kiss” (creepy I know) and it’s #0067.

The kitchen is my favorite room in the house. It’s an awesome green. Now be warned. For those who are looking for a subtle, soft green: this may not be your color. Honestly with our dark cabinets and countertops I absolutely love it. But it’s not a sage or anything; it packs a little more punch than that. The name is Hirschfield’s Bamboo Kiss (#401)

The Master Bedroom is a great chocolate brown. I was a little worried it would be too dark but honestly I think it’s a great, dark color. Plus with lighter bedding and the tons of sunlight it stays pretty light in the room. The color is Hirschfield’s “Noble Crown” (#0185). The back wall has a stripe treatment on it which is just a high gloss of the same shade. LOVE the way that turned out!
Unfortunately this is a rough picture. The walls match the stripe in the bedding (which unfortunately always seems to be wrinkled) that we got at Target last year. It’s a nice smokey blue that leans a little towards the teal end. The actual name is Hirschfield’s “Kathleen’s Garden” and is #464
My girly getaway (my favorite room in the house!) is painted a great light blue color which is Behr’s “Lime Light”. Sorry, I don’t have more details for you but I searched high and low for a good blue accent and this is a perfect shade.
The laundry room is a bright sunny yellow. I think it’s PERFECT for a laundry room and it makes that chore not half as horrible as it could be. I don’t have the name but the color is Hirschfield’s #952. Looking back I may do a softer shade; this yellow packs a punch!
We also have a nice neutral tan (builder beige some might call it) throughout the rest of the house. Here it is in “the man cave” downstairs.
The color is “Persian Fable” (#259). Looking back I wish we did something a little more brown since ours seems to have a lot of yellow/cream in it. It’s fine for the main areas but just wish it were a little more tan.

Holiday Decor

I’ve been majorly slacking in the decorations department. My house doesn’t have much “holiday spirit” at the moment. I’ll go the day after Christmas and possibly pick up some new things, but until then I’m fine with it.

Last week I finally got around to putting up our mantel, here are a few pics of that bad boy.

Here’s our little baby tree. We first got him when we lived in our condo, and at the time it was perfect size!

Now it seems a smidge small for what I’d like there. We’re hoping to shop the after Xmas sales this year and maybe pick up a pre-lit tree that’s a little larger. We’ll see how that goes! Next week I’ll highlight some of our ornaments/traditions, so I’ll save those for later!

On the table in the kitchen, my SUPER crafty mom (haha mom; do you like that!) made me this beautiful runner.
She just learned how to quilt this year, and has been going CRAZY with all her cool ideas! She found some great holiday fabrics and now I have some actual seasonal decorations which is awesome. Here’s a better zoomed in pic of the great fabric. I love how it pulls out the green from my kitchen.
Here’s our mantel downstairs in the man-cave.
Those stockings have been around for YEARS, someday I’d love to update them with some classic monogrammed ones that match a little better. Doesn’t PB have a good after-Xmas sale? (Seeing a theme here? All shopping must happen at major discounts for me!)
The reindeer on top is a great Holiday Card holder I got at TJ Maxx last year.
Last year this thing stayed up until Easter. And I didn’t even care.ÔĽŅ
Upstairs is pretty bare, on our table in the entryway I stacked up a trio of candles and propped up this cute sign in front. Nice and basic, but the “Seasons Greetings” can hopefully stay out for a little while!
We’re a little peeved because our Christmas wreath hasn’t come from the neighborhood boy scout yet. I thought it should be here the week after Thanksgiving, and all the other houses have theirs already! I might shoot his momma an email and see what the story is. Our house is pretty bare out front!

Help! My living room needs you!

Ok everyone, the living room is next on my $h!t list. It’s time to update. There are a couple big pieces I struggle with in this room. While I LOVE the open floor plan, the lack of wall-space leaves me flustered with the furniture arrangement. It’s also the very first room you see when you walk in, and it doesn’t really speak to our taste or style at all.

My Chief Financial Officer (aka, the hubster) has approved the necessary spending that may be needed to update this guy. That means it’s time for you all to help a girl out! His exact words were “before we do anything, you should get some ideas from your fellow bloggers.” Words to live by. Chime in people!

Here’s a view if you’re standing in our kitchen. The left side wall is taken up largely by a window. That entire wall is just over 20′ wide (give or take a few feet with the fireplace).

The wall on the right-hand side is a little shorter (approx 11 feet) and opens up into the entryway. Then you’ve got the lovely corner fireplace, which while beautiful is also the bane of my existence. It’s impossible to arrange furniture around the fireplace AND a TV. And let’s be honest; I sit and stare at the TV much more often than I stare at a roaring fire. The entire room (from left to right above) measures 15′ wide.

Here’s another angle with your back to the fireplace; it gives you a better idea of the open floor plan.

A few weeks ago I saw the bigger pillows on clearance at Target. That gives you a rough idea of the color scheme I’d LOVE to go with in here. (Possibly throw the orange in only in the fall).
That would carry a similar color-palette throughout my entire main floor and would look pretty nice I think.

Here where you come in. I’ve just got a few “rules” that I’m trying to work with.

  • I’d love to use as much as I already own if possible.
    • TV console must stay. It’s brand new and I love it. The TV placement however, is negotiable. While it would be a ROYAL pain to move; I’m open to doing what’s best for the space (and husband is up for remounting it if needed). I have to be honest though, I’d rather watch 7 hours of Kate Gosselin on Dancing with the Stars than help him move that TV. We’ll see what happens.
    • The leather ottoman stays. It’s our only “coffee table” and has phenomenal storage underneath.
    • We also have a great lamp; however it NEVER gets used. It’s that tall guy in the picture above. Would love to find a space for that.
    • I’d love to use these floating shelves in the room as well; but they can move.
  • Now: What can go?
    • The couches.¬†My husband has had these bad boys since his bachelor days, and when you sit in them you sink so low your feet come off the floor. Lovely place to nap; but it’s time to upgrade. These hopefully will find a nice new home via Craigslist.
  • The curtains (while it would break my heart) can go as well.

They were my first sewing project ever, and I could try and find a spot for them in another room in the house.

Ideally this makeover will:
1. Increase seating if possible. Right now I can comfortably sit like 3 people because the couches are such a black-hole. We have a sectional downstairs that I LOVE, but I’ve got no clue how I could arrange one in this room.
2. Update the furniture to be more neutral. Then I can update as I’d like with other colors seasonally or as our tastes change.
3. Allow me to display more family photos. I would love to do a photo gallery of sorts with a variety of different pics that could be updated. That’s what family rooms are for right?

That’s all I’ve got! I’m DYING for your opinion and can’t wait to see what your suggestions are!

Just this last weekend we got around to hanging some stuff up around the house, and we finally look a little less “scrooge-like”. We still have some outside stuff to do, but hopefully I can bribe my younger brother to do it for me this weekend (he’s coming to visit and in return for feeding him and providing him shelter, he is obliged to hang/plug-in my outside lights. Wish me luck on that one.)
We have 2 fireplaces in the house; one upstairs and one down. Because my husband is president of the local dude-fest chapter of Minnesota; our basement isn’t always the best place for me to exercise my decorating vice. Unless they make football themed Christmas trees that play the Husker fight song, my holiday decor will stay upstairs.
Therefore, the upstairs fireplace gets “the treatment”. Here she is:
Nice and basic; but it’s better than nothing! I need a little something above the mantle but I’m not creative. Maybe next year we’ll get to that.
Feel free to sit down, the amazingness of what you’re about to see may shock you.¬†On the mantel I just have some garland with lights around it. Then I found a few random ornaments whose hooks had gone missing. Those badboys went into three huricane vases. Stick some LED lights in and you’ve got yourself some ambiance.
It’s red and green. It light’s up. It’s on the mantel. Consider yourself decorated house!

Quite a few of my favorite home decor bloggers have started a cool link-up event as we get closer into the Holidays. Stop over at The Lettered Cottage for more (much nicer looking) mantel decorations!
