Why I love Southwest Airlines

With the new job; comes LOTS of time on the road. I own the relationship between 2 major schools, and the fall is our heaviest campus recruiting time. Luckily my flights are about an hour and a half, but it still can get pretty exhausting. Since Minneapolis is a Delta hub, I travel most often with them. This week however, I got a great deal on a flight with Southwest. Consider my life now forever changed.

I am officially a Southwest convert. They are AMAZING with customer service! I was on a Friday evening flight, and was exhausted from the work week. I got on the plane to hear a male flight attendant welcoming everyone to the plane. He would NOT STOP TALKING. At first I was so annoyed. Then I started listening to what he was saying.

It was HILARIOUS. One example? He was walking through the safety information and said:

“Please ensure your lapbelts are low and snug; just like our pilot prefers his speedos”

Another one?

“Moms/Dads if you’re traveling with children? Please make sure to secure your own mask before helping others. If you are traveling with more than one child; save the one you like more………or the one who will take care of you best when you’re old”

Made my flight. The jokes kept coming. They were honestly hilarious. Everyone on the flight was dying laughing, and clapped when he was all finished with the safety information.

I picked up the airline’s magazine and was so impressed by some of the information. They spoke about the in-flight services they offer for various holidays.

– On Independence day, anyone with Military ID gets preferred seating and enters/exits the plane first. Complimentary adult beverage as well.
– On Mothers/Fathers Day and Valentines Day, they offer a selection of greeting cards in-flight for anyone who may have forgotten.
– Free beer on St. Patrick’s Day!

Can’t beat that. For someone who now can consider themselves a “frequent flier”; I’ll take anything I can to make the trip more bearable.

Kudos to you Southwest; you clearly put your customers first!

Attention all Pop Fans!

It’s not exactly a secret that I love ALL things pop-culture. One of my coworkers showed me a fantastic new mash-up of all my favorites. You’ll see Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Usher, Jason DeRulo, Rhianna, and some random british chicks that rule. Hope this gets you through your Friday and pumps you up for the weekend!

Prepare for massive amounts of chair-wiggling, booty-shaking to occur. Go head girl!

How did I go so long without this in my life? I’m always looking for a good, basic tee that I can wear. Enter: The Hanes basic tee. Now the one caveat? Buy the men’s version! I got a men’s small and it’s PERFECT!

David Beckham rocks it; why can’t I?

Here’s what I noticed.
– The “v” is perfect with the men’s version. Sometimes with the women’s cuts, that V-Neck has you tip-toeing across the inappropriate line. This is great; and doesn’t require a tank underneath.
– The 100% cotton is SO comfy. I also love that the sleeves & torso are a little longer than some of the women’s cuts. Again, why don’t people realize that “crack kills” and we don’t all want our derriere’s exposed!?!? I’ll never know. These are a longer cut and will flatter any body type.
The kicker? Total cost is $18.99 for 6; that’s only 3.16/shirt (at Target of course)! You can’t beat that anywhere! Go, now. Such a steal!

New Love: Nordstroms Rack

Hubby needed some new work clothes and so we thought we’d check it out. How have I never stepped foot in this store?

Holy amazing savings batman. I’ve found a new favorite store: lookout Target. Because I would consider myself a fairly frugal shopper, I wanted to pass along some exciting buys.

1. Michael Kors Black Trench
Reg Price: $168 My price? $79.97

I saved over 50% off and this baby will NEVER go out of style. I had a great trench that I got about six years ago, but it’s now about 2-sizes too big. I had been meaning to find a new one but just had no motivation to start shopping. Now that the snow is melting in Minnesota, and I’ve become a Nordstrom’s Who-ore, I have this new badboy hanging in my closet. LOVE.

2. Birkenstock Sandals
Reg Price: $120 My Price? $69
I credit my mother for turning me on to the heaven that is Birkenstock Sandals. Hubs and I are taking off for Arizona next week and I have nothing to protect my feet besides $5 Old Navy flip-flops. I love these sandals because the soles have little notches that fit each toe perfectly. I also know that my mom and grand-momma live in them, which makes them cool enough for me.

I also picked up some tights for $6!! I know that they cost more at Target so I figured this was a smart buy. I also saw Coach, Uggs, Seven for Mankind Jeans, and Lucky jeans for $45!!!

Hubby also got a few Calvin Klein dress shirts for $30 each. This is much less than we’ve paid before, and a fantastic quality! He also saw nice suits for $300 (which is apparently a good deal for menswear? You’re talking to the girl who buys Isaac Mizrahi suits at Target so take it for what it’s worth! Wanted to pass that along though to anyone who may think it’s a steal like hubs did.)

Only downside? It was pretty chaotic; I felt like I was in Marshalls or TJ Maxx. You had to dig through the merchandise like crazy to find what you were looking for.

Also? If they don’t have your size, you’re SOL. Especially in the clearance.

Needless to say these slight annoyances paled in comparison to the massive discounts I received. Until we meet again…..

I consider myself a fairly low-maintenance girl. When I came to college, I joined a sorority and some of the older girls taught me how to wear eyeliner sitting on the sink in the bathroom. It’s one of my fondest memories of my first year actually. That being said, I do have a few go-to products that I use almost everyday. Here are some of my favorites:

1. Aveda Shampoo/Conditioner
It may be because my aunt is a stylist with Aveda, or because the smell of Aveda products (even on a stranger) makes me want to nustle against their head for a little while. I buy the massive containers and keep them with pumps in the shower. Never run out and have a mini-spa moment alone every morning. Fantastic! I’ve used the color conserve, the shampure, and also the mint scented. All are fabulous.

2. Aveda “Be Curly” product
When my hair dries naturally; it has a little wave in it but it’s nothing to write home about. I use a small amount of this on wet hair, scrunch it up a bunch, and let loose 17 pounds of hairspray and all of a sudden you’d think I permed my hair. It gives it just enough curl (see the picture here for a visual from our rehearsal dinner. I’m in the middle with the black/white dress and blonde hair). Plus if you haven’t gathered already; the smell is FANTASTIC. I also love that it only takes a small amount, one of these will last me quite a while.

3. Jergen’s “Natural Glow” moisturizer
I’ve heard mixed reviews on this from some people, but it’s my go-to moisturizer everyday. It gives you just enough color to get you through these horrendous MN winters. One bummer? It doesn’t smell great. They need to put a little coconut extract or something because it’s pretty yucky smelling. I get over it so that I can avoid looking like Edward Scissorhands from October-April each year.
4. Round Brush

When I was in 7th grade, I tried to curl my bangs using one of these and a blow drier (obviously I had sprayed them with Aquanet first). This resulted in me cutting 3 inches out of my hair as the round brush became embedded in my hair. Awful.

One trip to a salon in college changed my life. I had told the girl, “I’m lucky if I blow-dry my hair in the morning; I can’t straighten, curl, or be responsible for doing anything more than that each day”. Enter the round brush. Once you figure this bad boy out it’s so great. In the 10 minutes I’ve spent blow-drying my hair, I’ve also curled it, possibly added some volume to the top, and overall transformed myself from the typical hot mess I’m so accustomed to.

5. MAC Viva Glam Lipstick
I had never worn lipstick in my life until my wedding. I was more of a chapstick or lip-gloss kind of girl. My girlfriend Tina (who is so great with makeup) brought me along to the MAC counter and helped me pick some things out for the wedding. The girl put this shade on me and I’ll never buy another lipstick again. It’s a perfect, natural shade of pink that I absolutely love. (Don’t love the price tag, but I deal considering I only replace it so often; yeah I know there’s probably bugs living in it after one year but honestly? I don’t care.)

6. Sally Hansen “Maximum Growth” nail color

I’m a nail-biter. I hate it and I wish I weren’t, but it’s the truth. One thing that deters from the biting, is actually having strong nails that taste awful when you stick your fingers in your mouth. This is a great neutral shade, (almost clear) and is a nice everyday topcoat. It also strenghtens my nails so that if I ever do get the urge to bite, it’s pretty much like biting into a hard laffy-taffy and watching your teeth chip. No good friends.

7. Aveda “Air Control” Hairspray
Want to avoid that crunchy hairspray look? Go with this guy. It doesn’t cement your head, but it does hold shape, lift, or some curl. Plus? See above. Smells like heaven.

I just realized I look a little Aveda-obsessed. My aunt would be proud. But honestly? There stuff is fantastic, it smells great, and it’s the best I’ve ever used. Trust.

I’m slightly obsessed with reality tv. It’s sad, it’s unfortunate, but honestly it reminds me of how normal I am compared to the majority of America. I also secretly love the fact that your everyday person gets their day in the sun. Tonight was the kick-off of one of my guilty pleasures: America’s Best Dance Crew. SO GREAT. Am I embarrassed that I DVR this each week? Not at all, because on the three times a year that I need to bust out some moves (gotta love a good wedding reception) I will have studied these insane moves for months and will wow everyone. (Sadly, my dance moves don’t extend far beyond the sprinkler, the lawnmower, and my husband’s personal favorite: the ice auger). I thought today I would walk through my all-time favorite cinema: the dance movie! Here are my “top 5” faves (in no particular order)

1. Step Up 2: The Streets
Channing Tatum, Super hot chick, street dance-offs in the rain.  Main girl has the best washboard abs I’ve ever seen in my life. All set to a little “Apple Bottom Jeans”. Need I say more? Don’t rent it; just buy it. (and wait till your husband goes out of town to memorize the routines in your basement)
2. Center Stage
End scene? Routine to MJ’s “The Way you Make me Feel”. It’s real cheesy but still pretty good.
3. Flashdance
Are there really girls out there who are welders by day/exotic dancers by night? If so; go get em girl. All you need is a bucket of water over your head for that performance and you’ll make it good. What a feelin!

4. Footloose
Kevin Bacon? Never gets old. (Unless you’ve seen pictures of him lately. Homeboy’s had some botox.)

And the very best of all???

Duh people. Everytime this is on TV (about once a month) I wait for the end scene and pretend I’m Jennifer Grey (pre-nose job obviously) jumping right into Patrick Swayze’s arms. This movie will never be old or dated in my eyes. Best love story, dance movie, chick flick of all time.
Did I miss any? I’m off to go put my leg warmers, tank tops and stirrups on. See you on the dance floor.
